Astralos
Astralos is the ancient Thessalian name for Starlings, and this installation continues A Man Called Adam’s earlier explorations of this familiar bird’s behaviours and sonic impressions. Created for the exhibition “Comon Stars” at Redcar Palace Hub (3rd July – 5th September, 2026) the A/V and sculptural work features infinity mirrors, prismatic light play, hand-painted stop-frame animation and processed field recordings
“We love Starlings and we’ve explored them in various projects. There’s a track called Starlings on our last album, and we spied on them with surveillance cameras for our contribution to Gustav Metzger's “Remember Nature” day of art activism for MIMA and Tate Modern. For this exhibition we wanted to go deeper still and instead of us watching them, we wanted to investigate how Starlings themselves perceive the world.
Their sonic perception is 10 times faster than ours and they can discern far more richly textured soundscapes than we are capable of hearing. And though they’re often perceived as commonplace sort of birds, their fabulous iridescence and complex avian linguistics make them anything but ordinary.”
